The Basics

Leading a productive discussion is attainable, it just takes time and practice to learn how to do so efficiently and effectively. These are the five basic rules of thumb for preparing and leading a discussion. Remember - these are the basics, and more is covered in the following tabs!

1. Prepare to be a facilitator

You're already starting by reading this guide! Don't be afraid to take in this guide and all the other materials you might be using to prepare.

2. Choose a relevant topic - for both your forum and each individual discussion

Most times topics for forums are already set, but if you get to choose, go you! Pick something great. If your overall topic is set, make sure to pick relevant topics each week - hopefully with the input of participants!

3. Be prepared for the fun part - the actual discussion!

Make sure that you know about the topic you will be discussing. If not, research is key! Don't be afraid to ask a co-facilitator for help or to take the reins if they're an expert in a topic. Plan the discussion with applicable examples to discuss and questions for participants.

4. Establish your place as a discussion leader, but also as a peer

It's important that no one feels intimidated, because your job is really just to facilitate discussion so everyone (including you) can learn. Introduce yourself, have conversations outside of discussion, and be a participant as well as a leader! How? Share your opinion on subjects just like the participants, but make sure to let them talk first.

5. Create a Safe Space

Remember everyone is learning and growing, so we all should treat each other with respect. Give advance notice that problematic comments may be correct in the name of learning both by facilitators and other participants. If a problematic, unjust comment is made, correct the individual gently, but don't harass or bully.
